GT Legends Currently, IMO, the best simulation of the older cars (1965 - 1976). Take the Ferrari 275GTB for a spin or, with add-on cars, you can get access to the beautiful Ferrari 250 GT SWB (Short Wheel Base) in a choice of finishes (as well as many other great classic cars and almost every racing circuit you have ever head of!). It simulaes the modern day FIA series, so the cars have all been "equalised" within the categories as in real life (by use of air restrictors) and on most tracks this works to even out and David/Goliath properties of the competing cars; for example Mini Vs. Falcon! However on some tracks, certain cars do tend to have a distinct advantage. There are 3 categories/class of cars: TC65, GTC65 and GTC76. The handling on the whole is very nice, allowing nice controlled drifts - often the fastes way is a slight rift, witness Jim Clark in tin-tops! The Ferrari 275 feels heavy. Bad brakes and not all that quick to accelerate, alhough it is quicker than it feels. It has a lot of torque and a very contollable front end (with the right setup) so you can still turn here you want even with the power on. If you get into a major oversteer situation, its still quite easy to get out of it without losing too much momentum. It does have quite a particular driving style required (again, in tne with the setuop) - but once you get to grips with it, it can be a very dominating car in races. See here for a list of available downloads: www.nogripracing.com
There are many other colours to choose from which you can also download, so do a search for "Ferrari 250" on the No Grip website (select DOWNLOADS > SEARCH from the menu). The 250GT feel quite different to the 275. Lighter and more eager to 'rotate'. It has been created by an "online" friend on mine, and tweaked over many versions (which I helped with in the development process) and the current version is a very nice drive indeed. If you haven't yet got GTL, why not try the DEMO, and BUY THE GAME - GT Legends (PC DVD) |
GTR 2 Replicating the 2003 and 2004 FIA GT Chamionship seasons, with all the cars in their actual livery all present and correct. The sequel to FIA GTR, this toned down the difficulty to an extent, but you soon realise it is much, MUCH better than the original, which in hindsight was actually unrealisticaly hard. Still, when you start to push the envelope of the perfomance of these cars and get to the edge of the limits, they are just as hard as any to control and just as satisfying to drive. The Ferrari's included in this game are:-

SimRacing.org.uk These games come alive when racing fellow human competitors and the good drivers you often get online!!! If you fancy a good race with a great bunch of clean racers, check out SimRacing.org.uk. Introduce yourself and choose which hgame (or games) you want to play, an sign up! (Just post in the thread for an upcoming race or read in the "Start here" thread) I have been racing with them in various sims now (GT Legends, GTR 1 and 2, Race, Race 07, Power & Glory) for about 4 years. They run password protected servers, so you get to know the different characters with all levels of abilities ensuring you always have fun race. But it is taken seriously too, as we want to avoid the mayhem you too often get on open public servers. |
Test Drive Unlimited Quite an original concept - a MMO Racing Game. Hundreds of players on a huge island map. You can drive around and flash someone to trigger a private race (whihc up to 8 people can join) where the instigator can set the destination on the map, so can either be ashort sprint or a huge rally with multiple routes to the finish. The handing is BAD, but acceptable considering the games arcade nature. It actually becomes quite obsessive collecting the cars. These Ferrari's are included:-

Need for Speed series Not that I have played an NFS game for many years (as they have lost their direction and charm to me now) - but the first few games had a few Ferraris avaialable to drive.
The more recent games have been modded by several clever bedroom programmers. Here, you can see a list of cars. Also use the drop down list at the top to change which NFS game they are showing for. This link will show ones for "Most Wanted" (seems to be the most). Other related links: |
Power & Glory 2 This is a user-made add-on for GTR2, which converts it back to the old style cars in GTL but with (arguaby) better handling and the ability to drive in rain. It is of exceptional quality, with a highly skilled team working on their specialist areas of the project to create a very realistic sim to as oo d a standard as the original developers (if not better!!). The cars certainly feel more "solid", but you cannot really chuck them around quite in the same way you can in GTL so it's not quite as good fun, but in a way they are more satisfying to drive as the extra work and concntration reqiuired feels like you've actually done something! You can read more about the MOD here, or if you already have GTR2 and GTL (you need the GTL CD to prove you "own" the GTL car model content) you can download Power & Glory 2 here. |
iRacing Not strictly a Ferrari game (no Ferrari's in the retail game), but it is the next evolution in the "home simulator" and show what is achievable through the interaction of relatively cheap software and force feedback steering wheels. It's written by the same lead programmer as the iconic Grand Prix Legends so is well worth a look. See here for more information: www.iracing.com |
